A 45-year-old FedEx employee was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Rockville Road in Indianapolis. According to National Today The victim, Anthony, was walking to the gym when he was struck. Residents say the stretch of road lacks sidewalks, making it dangerous for pedestrians.
According to FOX59, Dr. Bailey, a local dentist, encountered Anthony several times, sometimes offering rides to the nearby gym and was familiar with the man as a fixture on the roadway; he remarked, "I didn’t know his last name, I only knew Anthony." The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, is the third pedestrian fatality in Indianapolis in just a week, drawing attention to broader concerns of road safety and pedestrian infrastructure, or the lack thereof.
According to the Indy Vision Zero tracker, this year has already seen 10 traffic deaths in Indianapolis. Last year, the city recorded 104 traffic deaths, including 37 pedestrians or cyclists, WTHR reports. Despite the city’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to eliminate such crashes by 2035, concerns remain over the immediate need for safer streets.
Amid the investigation into Anthony’s death, IMPD Public Information Officer Tommy Thompson urged anyone involved in the hit-and-run to come forward. ‘Sometimes, people just don’t know that they hit something they thought they did,’ he told FOX59. ‘They look back, didn’t know. We’re asking if you think maybe you’re involved or maybe you get home and you did notice some damage, please just come forward.’
