Palm Beach County residents get ready to bundle up. With a cold snap hitting the region, emergency measures are in play to ensure everyone finds a warm place tonight. The Palm Beach County Division of Emergency Management (DEM) has mobilized their Cold Weather Shelter Plan, anticipating low temperatures that could bring a bout of hypothermia for those exposed and potentially damaging frost for crops and pipes, as per the county's announcement.
With a cold weather advisory issued from 7:00 P.M. tonight to 10:00 A.M. today, the National Weather Service has also thrown in a freeze warning. The Palm Beach County DEM is not taking any chances, particularly with the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) kicked up to a Level III – Enhanced Monitoring.
Emergency shelters have been activated for tonight at several locations. They will open their doors at 7:00 P.M. and will remain available until 9:00 A.M. the following morning. To ensure those in need can reach these shelters, Palm Tran Connection will schedule bus pickups starting at 6 P.M. and 7:30 P.M. on established routes. People waiting for the bus, which they are utilizing the emergency transportation services, should dress warmly and keep an eye out for the scheduled times, as mentioned on the county's official website.
Among the safe havens opened are the Belle Glade Transitional Shelter and Lake Village at the Glades, along with the Salvation Army Center of Hope in West Palm Beach.
