In a move aimed at stimulating the local economy in northeast Indiana, State Rep. Tony Isa (R-Angola) has stepped up to the legislative plate to co-author a bill that could shift the state's gaming landscape. According to a recent report, House Bill 1038 has cleared the House and now pushes on to the Senate. Isa, along with his colleagues, is promoting a transparent and competitive process for casino license relocation – and Steuben County could be in line to hit the jackpot.
The legislation proposes to allow the Indiana Gaming Commission to meticulously consider applications from casinos itching to relocate to Allen, DeKalb, Steuben, or Wayne counties. Isa envisions Steuben County as more than a plausible choice; it's a locale primed to generate economic opportunity, not just for itself, but for Indiana at large. In a statement obtained by Indiana House Republicans, Isa expressed that "A casino here would strengthen tourism, support local businesses and provide new revenue to invest back into our communities."
House Bill 1038 seeks to lay a foundation for a fair and accountable selection process, with community engagement at its core. It promises to outline a timeline that is clear, offering local governments and citizens the opportunity to actively participate in shaping the area's economic destiny. The bill meticulously safeguards interest by mandating robust local backing, coupled with upfront community compensation and a commitment to uninterrupted casino operations during any potential transition.
Isa's plan would culminate in public access to filed applications through the Indiana Gaming Commission by January 15, 2027. A final decision is then expected to quickly follow by April 15 of the same year. By streamlining this timeline, Isa and his compatriots aim to foster investment and job growth – essential ingredients that could serve to economically rejuvenate the northeastern region of the state.
