In Speedway, Indiana, residents of The Legend at Speedway Apartments discovered raw sewage on the property. The issue came to light Feb. 7 when town crews responding to snow-removal complaints noticed the wastewater. An inspection by the Marion County Public Health Department confirmed illegal sewage diversion on the complex’s private grounds, the Town of Speedway reported.
The discovery, unrelated to recent water main breaks, led to a $2,000 fine for KPM Property Management, owner of the complex. KPM had 48 hours to fix the problem but did not comply, and the Town of Speedway warned additional fines could follow. Speedway Town Manager Grant Kleinhenz said, “This situation rests with the property owners to correct, and the responsibility is solely theirs,” adding that residents’ health and safety remain the town’s priority.
Local12 reported that the town will continue enforcement until the issue is resolved. Residents of the complex were advised to avoid playing in the snow or on playground equipment, remove shoes at their doors, and flush only toilet paper. The Marion County Public Health Department is assisting residents and can be reached at 317-221-2000 or [email protected].
WIBC reports that this incident represents a breach of municipal code prohibiting illicit storm drain system connections. As the violation occurs on private property, the Marion County Public Health Department has assumed primary oversight, while receiving full support and documentation from Speedway officials. "Our residents deserve safe, sanitary living conditions, and we will keep pressure on the owners until they deliver," declared Town Manager Grant Kleinhenz, as Speedway leaders work in tandem with county health inspectors to enforce compliance and safeguard the community.
KPM Property Management has not yet issued a statement on the sewage incident. The Town of Speedway remains ready to impose additional fines if the owner continues to violate health regulations.
