In what could spell relief for many in Northern Indiana, State Rep. Jim Pressel is shaking the table at the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission over spiking power bills. With his constituents' wallets in mind, Pressel has made a public call for the IURC to scrutinize the Northern Indiana Public Service Company's (NIPSCO) rate increases. Citing a substantial upswing in complaints about utility costs, the lawmaker pointed out the harsh numbers— NIPSCO users saw their bills for 1,000 kWh in July jump by over 90% compared to nine years prior, according to the Indiana House Republicans.
It's apparent the issue hits close to home for the region's residents, which Pressel underlined by referencing, the U.S. Energy Information Administration's report that pegged NIPSCO with the second highest residential customer rate among similar utilities. "Hoosiers in our community are struggling with high utility bills and we want to see solutions," Pressel told Indiana House Republicans. He's pushing for an aggressive review to reel in the expenses that are placing undue strain on household finances.
"An immediate NIPSCO review, in addition to the regulatory changes we're advancing this session, will put the state in a better position to address rising utility costs and provide real relief for ratepayers," Pressel asserted in the announcement.
