A driver was killed in a crash on the west side of Monroe County last night, according to the sheriff’s office. The collision happened near the intersection of Rockport Road and Acorn Drive, about one-third of a mile southwest of the Rockport Road overpass at I-69. Deputies with the county’s Major Crash Investigation Team responded, and motorists were urged to steer clear while investigators worked the scene.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the fatality but did not immediately release the victim’s name or say what caused the crash, WISH-TV reported. According to the station, the department posted updates to its social channels asking drivers to avoid the area while units cleared the roadway. The Major Crash Investigation Team remained on site into the evening.
Where it happened
The crash site sits on Bloomington’s west side, at the junction of two county roads that connect to I-69. Property and mapping listings place Acorn Drive just south of Rockport Road, locating the collision in a low-density residential stretch Redfin. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office posts traffic and incident notices on its Monroe County Sheriff’s Office site and social channels.
Investigation and local context
The Sheriff’s Major Crash Investigation Team, a four-officer unit trained in crash reconstruction, typically leads probes of serious collisions in the county. When the unit was announced, the Indiana Daily Student described its training, funding and the county’s 2024 crash totals, noting thousands of local collisions and multiple fatalities. Investigators said the probe into Wednesday’s crash is active as they work to determine what led to the collision.
The sheriff’s office asked anyone who saw the crash or has video of it to contact non-emergency dispatch at (812) 349-2781. Officials did not immediately release further details, and they said updates will be posted to the sheriff’s official channels as the investigation continues.
