Austin on Tuesday rolled out its first Kiva Hub, a new city-run program that offers crowdfunded microloans with 0% interest and no fees for local entrepreneurs. The loans will range from $1,000 to $15,000, with no minimum credit score, and city staff notes that community lenders can chip in with as little as $25. Each borrower is paired with a local Capital Access Manager who walks them through the application and fundraising process.

In a press release via the City of Austin, the Economic Development Department said the initiative is managed by its Small Business Division and is designed to cut through traditional barriers to capital. Deputy Director Anthony Segura stated, "Partnering with Kiva showcases our shared commitment to empower small business owners, regardless of background," according to the release. The same release notes that more than 90% of Kiva borrowers successfully fund their loans.

How the Kiva Model Works

Kiva's hub model connects local partners to an online crowdfunding platform so community members and lenders across the globe can back individual loan campaigns. Kiva's U.S. hubs page explains that hubs train a Capital Access Manager, provide business coaching, and handle backend loan management so partners can offer 0% interest, $0 fee loans to qualifying entrepreneurs. The platform leans on social underwriting and community fundraising to reach borrowers who might otherwise be shut out of traditional credit.

Austin Joins Waco As Second Texas Hub

Austin is now one of two designated Kiva Hubs in Texas, joining Startup Waco, which launched its program in 2021 and has deployed more than $250,000 to local businesses. Startup Waco has combined coaching with capital access to help neighborhood entrepreneurs build credit and tap growth funds.

Apply And Upcoming Workshops

The city is steering entrepreneurs to the Austin Kiva Hub page for details on coaching, eligibility, and how to apply through Kiva's portal. The program will be highlighted during Austin Small Business Week, May 4-8, with a dedicated "Microloans and Funding Paths" session on May 7, the City of Austin said.

What Borrowers Should Know

When a campaign fully funds, borrowers typically receive their money within about seven business days and may be eligible to reapply after repayment, according to Kiva's hub materials. Kiva notes it has supported thousands of U.S. borrowers and reports strong funding success for campaigns that secure local backing, but these are loans, not grants, and repayment responsibility ultimately sits with the borrower. Local coaching and the Capital Access Manager are there to help applicants shape a compelling campaign and navigate fundraising timelines.

Local coverage has underscored the program's aim to ease capital barriers for entrepreneurs who are "credit invisible." As reported by Spectrum News, city leaders say the hub links Austin to a global lending network while giving neighbors a direct way to back local visionaries.
