A grim discovery in a northwest Oklahoma City drainage ditch has police trying to piece together what happened near one of the city’s busier intersections. Officers say they are investigating after a body was found in a drainage channel near Reno Avenue and Rockwell Avenue on Tuesday. Firefighters and a hazardous-materials crew responded to the scene, but authorities have not released the person’s name or the cause of death. The area remains an active investigation, and no arrests have been announced.
According to KFOR, the Oklahoma City Fire Department confirmed both firefighters and a hazmat team were called out when the body was discovered near Reno and Rockwell. KFOR reports the medical examiner will determine the cause of death and that investigators are still working to figure out what led up to the discovery.
Where It Happened
The drainage line cuts through a busy northwest corridor that packs in gas stations, small businesses and nearby homes. Reno and Rockwell see plenty of traffic and emergency calls, which can make those first few hours of an investigation tricky as witness accounts, camera footage and even conditions at the scene can shift quickly. For now, police have locked down the immediate area while they document and process the site.
Not an Isolated Recovery
Recoveries in or near water have surfaced around the metro in recent years. Hoodline has covered similar situations, including a body found near Lake Overholser in October 2024 and a recovery at Boomer Lake in April 2025, highlighting how investigators often depend on the medical examiner to sort out whether a death is accidental, natural or criminal.
What Investigators Say
Authorities say the case remains active and that the medical examiner will determine both the cause and manner of death. Further updates are expected as the investigation moves forward. KFOR notes the person’s identity has not been released. Officials have not shared additional details while detectives continue to work the case.
