Early today in downtown Indianapolis, a bar fight that spilled into the street ended with gunfire and a woman shot on the sidewalk, police say. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police reported that the woman was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. Officers arrested a man on a firearm-related charge and a woman in connection with the shooting, and investigators said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
According to Fox59, IMPD officers were originally called to Georgia Street Rhythm & Blues Lounge for a reported fight. A short time later, gunfire was heard on the 100 block of South Meridian Street. Police found the wounded woman on the sidewalk and medics took her to Eskenazi, where she was reported to be in stable condition. Detectives stayed on scene, canvassing for witnesses and working to collect evidence.
Arrests and police statements
IMPD told Fox59 that a man was arrested on suspicion of being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm, and a woman was taken into custody for her alleged role in the shooting. Police emphasized that “there was no ongoing threat to the public” and asked anyone with video or information to come forward. Officials have not yet released the suspects’ names or any charging documents while the investigation continues.
Where it happened
The shooting unfolded in the South Meridian Street and Georgia Street nightlife corridor near Circle Centre. Georgia Street Rhythm & Blues Lounge is listed at 28 W. Georgia St., according to Visit Indy. The venue had set a 30-plus age limit after fights last year, public reporting shows. The same stretch of South Meridian has seen stepped-up patrols as police respond to recurring late-night disturbances.
How to help
Investigators are asking anyone with information or video from the area to contact IMPD or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers’ website lists that number and offers an online tip form, and previous local coverage has directed tipsters with similar cases to the IMPD Aggravated Assault Office at 317-327-3475. More information on submitting anonymous tips is available at Crime Stoppers.
Legal note
Police described the man’s arrest as for being a “serious violent felon in possession of a firearm.” That allegation, if it results in formal charges, can carry enhanced penalties under state and federal law. As of publication, prosecutors had not released charging paperwork, and the investigation remains active.
