Howard County deputies raced to a home in the 1400 block of North 250 East in Kokomo today after a report of a shooting, finding a chaotic scene that could have ended much worse. The first deputy pulled up within six minutes and discovered an adult with a gunshot wound to the leg. Deputies quickly applied a tourniquet, and the victim was taken by ambulance, then later airlifted to an area hospital for further treatment. Negotiators eventually convinced the homeowner to walk out of the house peacefully, and a suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

According to a post from the Howard County Sheriff's Office, 911 dispatchers received a call that someone had been shot at the Kokomo residence. Alongside sheriff's deputies, St. Vincent Health, the Greentown Volunteer Fire Department and the Howard County Emergency Management Agency responded to the address.
The sheriff's office reports that deputies found an adult with a gunshot wound to the leg and immediately rendered aid, using a tourniquet before paramedics took over and transported the victim to a hospital. The person was later airlifted for additional medical care.
Negotiations, suspect and community risk
Negotiators contacted the homeowner and persuaded him to come out of the residence without the use of force. Initial information described the homeowner as an elderly man believed to be living with dementia. Authorities say the incident appears to be isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the wider community.

The sheriff's office states that a suspect was taken into custody at approximately 12:26 p.m. Tuesday, and the case remains under investigation by Detective Scott Waymire under case number 34-63.
