Early-rising downtown workers woke up to crime scene tape on East Washington Street after a pre-dawn shooting left one person clinging to life, according to police.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called around 2 a.m. to the 100 block of East Washington Street near North Pennsylvania Street, where they found a victim who had been shot and rushed that person to a hospital in critical condition. At least one individual was detained at the scene as officers locked down the area and began their investigation. Authorities have not announced any charges and say the case remains active.
According to WTHR, detectives and crime scene technicians spent the early morning hours combing through the downtown stretch, documenting evidence and interviewing potential witnesses while the victim remained in critical condition at a local hospital.
IMPD Says All Parties Accounted For, No Ongoing Threat
Police worked quickly to tamp down fears about a larger danger in the downtown core.
"IMPD detectives believe all parties involved have been accounted for and there is no threat to the public," the department said, as reported by WTHR. Officers were seen canvassing the surrounding blocks, talking with people who might have seen or heard anything and locking in the early details of what unfolded just a few hours after last call.
How To Share Tips With Investigators
Detectives are still working to piece together the lead-up to the gunfire and have put out a familiar request: if you know something, say something.
As noted by WRTV, IMPD's Homicide Office can be reached directly at 317-327-3475, and Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana accepts anonymous tips at 317-262-TIPS (8477). Police asked the public to steer clear of the immediate area while the scene is processed and the investigation continues into the weekend.
