Indianapolis is waking up to a cloudy Thursday morning, April 16, 2026, with temperatures already hovering near 70°F at Indianapolis International Airport. A round of showers and a few isolated thunderstorms is expected before 10 a.m., with a chance for a few more isolated storms lingering into midafternoon as the sky slowly starts to break. West-southwest winds will ramp up this afternoon to around 9 to 13 mph with gusts near 23 mph, so trips across bridges and open stretches of highway could feel a bit blustery.
Morning Showers And Thunder Chances
Showers are most likely during the morning commute, and some quick-hitting downpours could leave roads slick for short periods. Forecasters are calling for new rainfall totals generally between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, which should translate to patchy wet pavement and the possibility of brief slowdowns if you drive into one of the heavier cells. Visibility should stay mostly decent, although a stronger shower could briefly cut it down.
Afternoon Warmup And Gusty Winds
By afternoon, skies are expected to turn partly sunny, letting temperatures jump into the upper 70s with a high near 79°F. Friday looks even hotter, with highs anticipated to reach the mid 80s before a stronger system arrives late Friday night into Saturday. Wind gusts could briefly spike into the 20 to 30 mph range both this afternoon and again on Friday, so now is a good time to secure lightweight outdoor items before they go tumbling into the neighbor’s yard.
Weekend Turn And Early-Week Frost Risk
A cold front is set to sweep through late Friday night into Saturday, bringing another round of showers and thunderstorms and the chance for higher rainfall totals in a few spots. The National Weather Service Indianapolis is flagging near-record warmth through Saturday, followed by a much cooler airmass Sunday into early next week. Lows could drop into the mid 30s in some of the outlying areas, which creates a risk of frost Monday morning, especially north of I-70. Gardeners and anyone with sensitive outdoor plants will want to have covers or other protection ready for early Monday, just in case.
If you are planning to spend time outside this weekend, it is smart to line up an indoor backup for Saturday afternoon and to tie down patio furniture now while it is still warm.
