Two 17-year-old males were arrested Sunday after reports of gunfire on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, according to IMPD. Officers said they recovered multiple rifles, handguns and an extended magazine, and seized a small bag of marijuana at the scene. Several juveniles were also detained and interviewed as part of the on-scene investigation.
Weapons and arrests
According to a police report obtained by WTHR, officers seized two AR-15-style rifles: a Del-Ton .223 with one round in the chamber and a 25-round magazine, and a black-and-silver AR-15 with no serial number and one round in the chamber. They also recovered two 9mm pistols, a Glock 17 with one round in the chamber and five in the magazine, and a Taurus G3C with 13 rounds in the magazine.
The report notes that officers additionally found an extended rifle magazine loaded with 34 .223-caliber rounds, towed a 2019 Dodge Durango from the scene and seized a plastic bag containing about five grams of marijuana. The two 17-year-olds were arrested on suspicion of unlawful carrying of a firearm by a minor, according to the report.
Who officers interviewed
IMPD said three 16-year-old males and one 15-year-old male were interviewed at the Circle during the response. Detectives have not released additional information about a possible motive or whether anyone was struck by gunfire, and the investigation remains active.
Downtown context
The arrests come amid a run of youth-involved shootings and weapons seizures in and around downtown Indianapolis, a trend that has prompted stepped-up patrols and district enforcement. Reporting by WRTV details other recent incidents at Monument Circle, while coverage of a north side raid haul highlights larger multi-agency gun seizures earlier this year.
What happens next
IMPD is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers as investigators work to determine who had firearms and who was directly involved. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is expected to review the case, and the two teens remain in custody on preliminary counts of unlawful carrying of a firearm by a minor, according to WTHR.
