After months of public silence, the investigation into the break-in at late NASCAR driver Greg Biffle’s Mooresville estate finally has a visible lead. Deputies executed a search warrant Thursday at a home in Lincoln County and identified a person of interest in the January burglary. Investigators say they were looking for property believed to be tied to the theft, and so far no arrests have been announced. It is the first public movement in the case since surveillance footage of the intruder went out in January.
Search warrant focuses on Lincoln County property
Adam Dillard, an attorney for the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, told WBTV that “Law enforcement are executing a search warrant and searching for evidence related to the break-in at the Biffle residence.” The search unfolded on St. James Church Road and involved deputies from both the Iredell and Lincoln County sheriff’s offices, according to WBTV. When a WBTV reporter asked a man leaving the property about the police activity, he replied, “Not a f------ thing, buddy.”
What was taken
The break-in at Biffle’s estate along Doolie Road happened around 11 p.m. on Jan. 7, according to law enforcement records. An incident report lists roughly $30,000 in cash, NASCAR memorabilia, two Glock handguns and a backpack among the items stolen, according to AP.
Surveillance footage released
Sheriff’s investigators released stills and interior video on Jan. 21 that show a masked person entering and moving through the home, and deputies said the suspect spent an “extended amount of time inside the home.” Local coverage and the sheriff’s release of the footage prompted tips from the community in the weeks after the break-in. The surveillance was widely reported, including by the Charlotte Observer and in suspect captured on video coverage.
Where the investigation stands
Authorities say they have been working with area race teams and other partners to trace missing memorabilia and to follow up on tips as the probe continued, and no arrests have been announced, according to WBTV. The burglary came weeks after Biffle and six others were killed when a private jet crashed on Dec. 18; the National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report indicated Biffle was not at the controls when the Cessna crashed, as reported by CBS News.
How to help
Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to contact the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 704-878-3180 or through the sheriff’s office app. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office first shared the video and requested tips when the footage was released in January, according to Iredell Free News.
