A pre-dawn crash on Indianapolis' south side left two people dead and two others injured early Saturday, after what police say was a two-vehicle collision in the 4900 block of South Sherman Drive near East Thompson and Shelbyville roads. The two people who died were found inside one of the vehicles, authorities said. At least one person from the second car is being detained while investigators work the scene, and two other occupants were taken to local hospitals, where they were reported awake and breathing.
What police are saying
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded just before 3 a.m. and told reporters that the two people inside one vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, while two males from the second vehicle were transported to hospitals and are “awake and breathing,” according to WTHR. The Beech Grove Police Department is assisting with the investigation, and Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services crews were also at the scene, the outlet reports. As of early Saturday morning, investigators had not released the victims’ names or a possible cause of the crash.
Road-safety context
Statewide, traffic safety remains a persistent concern. The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute’s crash fact books show Indiana has recorded roughly 900 to 1,000 traffic fatalities in recent years, underscoring how stubbornly deadly collisions continue to be. Those reports highlight recurring factors such as occupant protection and impaired driving that often play a role in fatal crashes and help guide local enforcement and prevention efforts, according to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
Investigation ongoing
Authorities say the investigation is still active and that they are holding back additional details while officers process the scene, per WTHR. Beech Grove police continue to assist IMPD as medics care for the injured, and officials say they will release more information when it is available. Hoodline will provide updates as investigators share new details.
