A person is in critical condition after a Sunday evening shooting on Indianapolis' east side, turning a familiar cross street into yet another active crime scene. Officers found the wounded victim near East 38th Street and North Mitthoefer Road and rushed them to the hospital with gunshot wounds, while investigators worked to figure out who pulled the trigger.
What we know so far
According to WTHR, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the shooting happened just before 7 p.m. yesterday in the 3800 block of North Mitthoefer Road. Officers arrived to find a person suffering from gunshot wounds and transported the victim to a hospital in critical condition.
Police did not immediately release any details about a possible suspect or a motive. Detectives stayed in the area canvassing for witnesses and evidence as the investigation continued. Authorities have called this a developing case and have asked anyone with information to step up.
A stretch with repeated violence
The intersection of East 38th Street and Mitthoefer Road has seen multiple shootings in recent months, including fatal incidents and other critical injuries, according to local reporting by WRTV and a Hoodline report on a recent deadly car shooting along the same stretch (Deadly car shooting near 38th). Community groups such as the Ten Point Coalition have increased patrols and neighborhood outreach in response, while residents push for more police presence and support services. Local leaders say those volunteer and official efforts show just how concerned the far east side has become about the recurring violence.
Police ask for tips
IMPD urged anyone with information, cellphone video or surveillance footage from the area to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477), per WTHR. Tips can also be directed to the IMPD Homicide Office. Investigators say even seemingly minor details or brief video clips could help them piece together what led up to the shooting.
