A midday drive on Indianapolis's east side turned tragic Thursday when a two-vehicle collision at a busy intersection left an SUV passenger dead and sent the driver to the hospital, authorities said.
The crash happened around noon at North Shadeland Avenue and East 16th Street, where investigators say a pickup truck struck an SUV. Both people in the SUV were taken to a hospital. The male passenger later died, while the female driver was treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening.
According to WTHR, the pickup truck's driver was not hurt. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department told the outlet that impairment is not believed to have played a role in the collision. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Investigators On Scene
IMPD has not released the names of anyone involved. Officers stayed at the intersection for several hours as they documented the scene, directed traffic and waited for crews to tow away the vehicles. Lanes were reopened after the wreckage was cleared. Officials have not said what they think led up to the impact.
