A man died last evening after his car slammed into a building on Indianapolis' east side and burst into flames, leaving a smoke-blackened scene beside a Conoco gas station near East 10th Street and North Emerson Avenue. The vehicle struck a structure next to the station, and firefighters had to knock down heavy flames before they could get to the trapped driver. Neighbors and passing motorists tried to help but could not free him in time.
Crash scene and response
According to WRTV, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said the male driver was rushed to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Indianapolis Fire Department crews and police officers worked the scene as traffic around the intersection was diverted.
WRTV reports the crash happened just before 6 p.m. Friday, and that several bystanders tried to pull the driver from the vehicle before flames overwhelmed it. Once firefighters knocked down the blaze, investigators started piecing together how the car ended up in the side of the building.
IMPD says the crash is still under investigation and that the victim's name has not yet been released, per WTHR. Anyone with information or video of the crash is asked to contact the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's non-emergency line.
