A 22-year-old Gresham man has been ordered to spend the next three decades in prison for two separate knife attacks on men living on the streets, one of which turned deadly.
On March 31, 2026, Antony Kassab was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to a slate of charges that included manslaughter, attempted murder and related weapons and assault counts. He entered those pleas in connection with the killing of one man and the near-fatal stabbing of another.
Kassab appeared in Multnomah County court on Tuesday to receive the sentence, according to KATU. Prosecutors said he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon in the December 2023 death of Cody Funk, and to attempted murder and first-degree assault for a separate attack that seriously injured David McQuown.
Victims and Investigation
According to a Gresham Police Department news release, officers found Funk’s body near the intersection of Southeast 190th Avenue and Division Street on Dec. 26, 2023. An autopsy later determined he died from multiple stab wounds.
Detectives eventually tied Kassab to Funk’s killing while he was already in custody in connection with a February 2024 stabbing, the department said. Investigators also noted that both Funk and McQuown were experiencing homelessness at the time of the attacks, underscoring how exposed they were to violence.
Family Speaks at Sentencing
In court, Funk’s mother, Sandra Funk, confronted Kassab and described the emotional wreckage left behind.
“You have taken so much away from us. It seems like since then there has been a black cloud over our whole family,” she told him, according to KATU. She also thanked detectives for their work on the case and said her family was grateful that the suspect had been caught.
Prosecution Timeline
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said a grand jury indicted Kassab in April 2024 on charges of murder in the second degree and unlawful use of a weapon in Funk’s death, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.
Police had arrested Kassab earlier that year after responding to a Feb. 9, 2024 stabbing in the 18300 block of Southeast Stark Street that left McQuown hospitalized, as reported by KPTV. That attack ultimately helped detectives connect him to Funk’s killing.
City Response
Gresham Police Chief Travis Gullberg called the stabbings an assault on “particularly vulnerable members of the community” and said detectives worked “tirelessly to seek justice,” according to the department’s Gresham Police Department news release.
The same release directs people experiencing homelessness to Gresham’s homeless services program and lists a hotline for those seeking help, a reminder that the violence unfolded among residents already living in crisis.
