Gunfire outside the Twin Aire Kroger turned a routine grocery run into a crime scene Saturday night on Indianapolis' near east side, leaving one person wounded and another detained as police flooded the parking lot.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers said the injured person was awake and breathing when first responders arrived. Detectives described the case as an active investigation and are urging anyone who saw or recorded what happened to speak up.
IMPD: One injured, one detained
Officers responded to reports of shots fired in the parking lot in the 600 block of Twin Aire Drive, where they found one person suffering from gunshot wounds and detained another individual. IMPD said it is still working to determine what role, if any, the detained person played in the incident. Names and potential charges have not been released while detectives process the scene and track down witness statements, according to WTHR.
Police ask for tips
IMPD is asking anyone with video, dash-cam footage or other information to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477) or submit an anonymous tip online. Crime Stoppers' website details how tips are submitted, how tipsters remain anonymous and how rewards can be paid out when information helps close a case, per Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
East-side context
This Kroger shooting is the latest in a string of violent incidents on the near east side that have led police to lean on neighbors for help. In February, a separate case left one person clinging to life, a situation that underscored how detectives often depend on neighborhood video and community tips to move investigations forward, per one clinging to life.
