A nearly three-month wait for answers in a deadly Humboldt Park shooting has led to a major break in the case. Chicago police on Saturday charged 35-year-old Jonathan Roldan with first-degree murder in the killing of U.S. Army veteran and father Andrew Garay, according to investigators.
Garay was fatally shot while sitting in his vehicle on the 3500 block of West Wabansia Avenue around 9 p.m. on Jan. 23, family members and police say. The arrest is the first significant development since that night, when a quiet evening on the block turned into a crime scene and a family’s life was permanently altered.
Officers took Roldan into custody on Thursday and later charged him in the Jan. 23 shooting, ABC7 Chicago reports. Garay was sitting in his car when a gunman walked up and opened fire, according to the station. Police have not released a possible motive or disclosed any bail information. Detectives say their investigation is still very much active as they continue to track leads.
Family Remembers Garay
As the criminal case moves forward, Garay’s family is still living with the immediate shock of his loss. In earlier coverage, ABC7 Chicago spoke with relatives who described him as selfless and hardworking, the kind of person who showed up for everyone else long before thinking of himself.
They said Garay, a U.S. Army veteran, dreamed of joining the Chicago Police Department. His mother, Debbie Knutt, recalled their last interaction, a brief and ordinary moment that now feels anything but. “He kissed me on my forehead three hours before and said, ‘Mom, I’ll be back in a little bit,’” she told reporters. The family said Garay worked as a package delivery driver and leaves behind a 7-year-old daughter.
Court Date And Next Steps
Roldan is scheduled to appear in Cook County court on Sunday, April 12, 2026, on a first-degree murder charge. At that hearing, prosecutors will decide whether to seek pretrial detention or ask a judge to set bail. Police say the investigation remains open as detectives review new tips and evidence.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Chicago Police Department.
