Early risers in Indianapolis stepped out into clear skies and mid-30s temperatures this morning as a Freeze Warning stayed in effect through 9:00 AM EDT. Patchy frost is likely in low-lying and sheltered spots, so expect slick grass underfoot and some tender plants to take a hit. Skies will stay clear and highs should rebound to about 59°F this afternoon with light north-northwest winds around 3 mph.
Another Early-Season Freeze
This chilly start keeps a run of cool April mornings going. An earlier report on neighborhood freezes highlighted similar cold snaps in low-lying areas, and local gardeners have been warning that late frosts remain possible through mid-April. If you planted early, keep seedlings and newly set flowers covered through the morning hours.
Protect Tender Plants And Pipes
According to NWS Indianapolis, frost and freeze conditions "could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing." To cut down on damage, cover tender plants with sheets or frost cloth, move potted plants inside, and disconnect garden hoses or insulate exposed spigots. Most yards will warm quickly after sunrise, but shaded and low-lying spots will hang on to frost the longest.
Warmup And Storms Later This Week
A noticeable warmup arrives Tuesday with highs near 76°F and south-southwest winds that could gust as high as about 28 mph. A chance of showers and thunderstorms develops Tuesday night after 8:00 PM and may linger into Wednesday, while Thursday looks sunnier and warmer near 81°F. The best chance for more widespread showers and thunderstorms comes Friday, so keep an eye on the timing if you have outdoor plans late in the week.
