A Marion County jury on Thursday found 33-year-old Justin Callaway guilty of murder in the October 2024 shooting that killed 44-year-old Christopher Clark on Indianapolis' east side. Callaway was also convicted of unlawful carrying of a handgun and auto theft, and has a sentencing hearing scheduled for May 7, 2026.
Shooting And Arrest
IMPD officers first responded to the 5400 block of East 38th Street on Oct. 26, 2024, after reports of gunfire. Clark was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead. Investigators identified a suspect vehicle, and minutes later an officer located Callaway at a nearby gas station at 5950 E. 38th St., where he was found suffering what appeared to be a gunshot wound and taken for treatment, as reported by WISH.
Verdict And Prosecutors' Account
After a multi-day trial, jurors returned guilty verdicts on the murder charge and on counts of unlawful carrying of a handgun and auto theft, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office said. Prosecutors told jurors that Clark was unarmed when Callaway fired multiple times, that Callaway was shot in the arm during the incident, and that Callaway had stolen a Pontiac Vibe from a gas station four days before the shooting, per WTHR.
Where This Case Sits Locally
Clark's death is recorded among the city's 2024 homicide tallies, highlighting a year that has stretched investigators across the east side. Local compilations of last year's victims list the 5400 block of E. 38th Street as the scene of the fatal shooting, according to an Indy homicide list.
Next Steps
Online court records list Callaway's sentencing for May 7, 2026, according to WTHR. The case will return to Marion County Superior Court for that hearing.
