A late-night fight inside a Chatham apartment ended in gunfire Wednesday, leaving one man dead and another wounded on the South Side, authorities said. The chaos broke out inside a unit in the 7900 block of South Saint Lawrence Avenue and escalated until shots were fired. Both men were rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center as officers locked down the building and began collecting evidence, including multiple handguns.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the shooting started around 10:40 p.m. on April 15 after an argument among several men in the apartment turned physical. A 30-year-old man was shot several times in the leg and later died at the hospital. A 31-year-old man was shot in the neck and was taken to the same hospital, where he was listed in good condition. Three handguns were recovered at the scene, and Area 2 detectives are leading the investigation.
Chatham Has Seen Multiple Shootings This Spring
The deadly apartment clash adds to a tense spring in Chatham. Earlier this year, a Feb. 28 drive-by left a man dead in the neighborhood, and ABC7 reported an April 14 East Chatham shooting that left two people critically wounded. Residents and community leaders say the drumbeat of incidents has only heightened anxiety about safety as detectives try to sort out what sparked the latest violence.
Investigation Underway
Police have not released the victims' names and have not announced any arrests. Detectives are interviewing witnesses and processing the apartment for evidence. Per the Chicago Sun-Times, three handguns were recovered at the scene, and the case remains with Area 2 investigators.
