A late-night shooting on Indianapolis' south side left a man in critical condition Sunday, according to police. Officers were called to 4950 South East Street around 11:30 p.m., where they found a man with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital, and his condition was later described as critical.
According to FOX59, officers initially reported that the victim arrived at the hospital in stable condition before his status was updated to critical. IMPD has not released any information about a possible suspect or motive.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the IMPD Homicide Office at (317) 327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-8477.
What Police Are Doing
Overnight, detectives canvassed the area around South East Street, working the block for witnesses and any surveillance or phone video that might show what happened before or after the gunfire. That kind of door-to-door work has become standard for IMPD at shooting scenes, where doorbell and dash-cam footage can quickly turn a dead end into a solid lead.
As WISH-TV has reported, community tips and shared video have helped investigators identify suspects in other cases, sometimes within a day.
South-Side Context
The shooting adds to a string of south-side incidents that have kept residents on edge and police busy. Late-night gun violence in particular has been a recurring theme in local reports, highlighting ongoing worries about safety in parts of the city.
Past south-side coverage has tracked several previous shootings along with repeated appeals from families and detectives for information.
IMPD did not immediately say whether any arrests had been made in Sunday night’s case. Detectives again urged anyone who knows something to contact the Homicide Office at (317) 327-3475 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-8477. This story will be updated as police release additional details.
