Williamson County parents were told Tuesday that detectives had investigated an anonymous TikTok message that reportedly threatened to “shoot up” Page Middle School in Franklin. After looking into the post, law enforcement and school officials said officers determined the threat was not credible and that there is no known danger to students or staff. Detectives told the district they believe the account belongs to someone outside Tennessee and are seeking identifying information from the platform.
What officials said
In a message to families, Page Middle Principal Dr. Eric Lifsey said law enforcement investigated the anonymous online threat and determined it was not credible. “They do not believe there is a danger to any of our students, staff or school,” Lifsey wrote. Detectives with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Homeland Security told the district they plan to file a subpoena with TikTok to try to identify the person who made the comment, according to WSMV.
Legal context
Under Tennessee law, recklessly threatening an act of mass violence on school property can be charged as a felony and may include court-ordered restitution and other penalties, according to Justia. The statute also requires that anyone with knowledge of a credible threat report it immediately to local law enforcement, a step districts rely on during threat assessments.
Why social-media threats are tricky
Posts that begin as jokes or private chats can spread rapidly and prompt investigations, a pattern ProPublica documented in Tennessee and elsewhere. Investigators commonly ask platforms for account records, and reporting shows federal and local agencies sometimes use subpoenas or administrative requests to obtain that data, a practice examined recently by The Washington Post.
What parents should do
School officials say there is no current danger, but ask families to stay vigilant and report anything concerning to school staff and police. Page Middle's main office phone and address are listed on the school's site as (615) 472‑4760 and 6262 Arno Road in Franklin, per Williamson County Schools. For legal requirements about reporting threats, see Tennessee Code §39‑16‑517 on Justia.
