A pre-dawn shooting turned deadly early Saturday on Indianapolis' west side, leaving one person dead and homicide detectives searching for answers, according to police.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called just before 4:30 a.m. to the 5600 block of Oliver Avenue, where they found a person with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. That person later died, authorities said.
On scene, officers confirmed the victim's injuries appeared to be from gunfire, and homicide detectives along with crime-scene technicians began processing the area, FOX59 reported. The department said an investigation is underway but did not immediately release the victim's name or any suspect information.
Deadly case adds to west side gun violence worries
This killing comes amid a run of late-night and early-morning shootings that have rattled neighborhoods on the city's west side in recent weeks. Earlier coverage highlighted a March 16 shooting that left one person wounded and noted how investigators often urge neighbors to check surveillance footage and share anything that might help the case; see Hoodline's coverage of a March 16 shooting for background.
How to help investigators
Police are asking anyone with information, video or photos tied to the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477) or the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475. As of initial reporting, no arrests had been made and no suspect descriptions had been released. Investigators again urged anyone with information to call the tip lines above. FOX59 published the first local account of the shooting, and IMPD may release additional details as the investigation moves forward.
