A fatal crash on Saturday shut down a stretch of West Thompson Road on Indianapolis' south side, turning a routine afternoon into a crime scene as investigators moved in to figure out what went wrong.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the 30 block of West Thompson Road, where emergency responders pronounced at least one person dead at the scene. IMPD's Crash Investigations unit stayed on site while detectives worked to piece together how the collision unfolded.
According to WTHR, police confirmed the crash as fatal and shut down West Thompson Road between South Meridian Street and South Senate Avenue while they processed the scene. Officials asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
Investigation underway
IMPD's fatal crash team is expected to sort through physical evidence, speak with witnesses and review any available video to establish the sequence of events and determine whether speed, impairment or other factors played a role.
Thompson Road has seen serious collisions before, including a motorcyclist fatality reported in March 2025, according to WISH, a pattern that has kept the corridor in local safety conversations.
