A pre-dawn cargo heist at a Vernon Hills distribution center spun into a multi-vehicle police chase that raced down to Chicago and ended in a crash on the South Side, with officers recovering more than $100,000 in stolen computer equipment from a wrecked minivan.

According to Vernon Hills police, officers were called to the CDW complex in the 200 block of North Milwaukee Avenue around 1 a.m. after a truck driver reported that masked people were pulling cargo from a trailer parked in a secured lot. The driver told officers he was battered and threatened with a firearm that was not displayed, according to CBS Chicago.

Police say the suspects took off in three separate vehicles, heading onto I-94 at Townline Road. A short time later, the vehicles were spotted by the Glencoe Public Safety Department. The pursuit continued until a gray Chrysler Pacifica crashed in the 5400 block of South Wells Street on Chicago's South Side. Officers took the driver into custody at the scene, while a passenger ran from the crash and got away, CBS Chicago reported.

Inside the crashed vehicle, investigators say they found more than $100,000 worth of stolen computer equipment tied to the Vernon Hills theft. The other two suspected getaway vehicles involved in the original cargo theft had not been located.

Cargo theft is surging

What played out in Vernon Hills is part of a larger and increasingly costly pattern. Overhaul's 2024 annual cargo-theft report recorded 2,217 incidents, roughly a 49 percent jump year over year, and a recent Senate hearing warned that strategic cargo theft and freight-fraud schemes are becoming more common, according to Congress.gov.

What investigators say

Police say the investigation is very much active. Detectives are following leads in an effort to track down the two outstanding vehicles believed to have fled the Vernon Hills theft scene. The driver arrested after the South Wells Street crash remains in custody while officers continue processing the vehicle and cataloging the recovered equipment, according to CBS Chicago.

Why it matters locally

CDW lists a Vernon Hills distribution center on North Milwaukee Avenue, a regional hub that moves bulk computer hardware and other tech gear. Facilities like this are prime targets for organized crews looking for high-value, easily resold merchandise.

Even a single large theft can ripple through local supply chains, forcing retailers and small businesses to wait longer for equipment, juggle replacement orders, and ultimately eat higher costs that have a way of landing in customers' laps.
