Bargain hunters in the South Bay are about to get a new stop on their shopping circuit. Burlington is set to open a new store in National City this June, taking over the former Big Lots space at Bay Plaza and bringing its mix of off-price brands and seasonal deals to the neighborhood. The move is expected to add both full and part-time jobs at the center just in time for the summer retail rush.
Where the store will go
Permit records flagged by WhatNow show Burlington lined up for Unit B at 1410 E Plaza Blvd in the Bay Plaza shopping center. The filing lists the off-price chain as the new tenant in the spot most recently occupied by Big Lots.
Part of a national expansion
The National City location is one small piece of a much bigger rollout. Burlington is adding dozens of stores this spring and plans to open more than 100 locations by the end of 2026, according to USA TODAY. In an emailed statement cited by the outlet, CEO Michael O’Sullivan said the company looks forward to giving shoppers the chance to explore great savings.
What shoppers and job seekers can expect
Burlington’s Grand Openings page highlights local hiring for new stores along with promotional perks tied to opening weekends. The retailer now operates more than 1,000 locations across the country, and Burlington typically rolls out short-term bonuses and a concentrated hiring push around its grand opening events.
Timing and next steps
The WhatNow report pegs June for the National City debut, although a specific opening day has not been listed. As the company transforms the former Big Lots space, shoppers can expect Burlington’s standard spread of apparel, home goods and seasonal merchandise once the doors officially open.
