A routine weeknight turned tense along 116th Street as a "significant" fire ripped through a Carmel City Parks maintenance building on Wednesday, sending a thick column of smoke over the area and forcing trail closures nearby. Firefighters spent hours trying to corral the blaze, at one point pulling back after part of the rear of the structure partially collapsed. Crews focused on stopping the flames from jumping into nearby storage and office sections of the complex.
Crews switch to defensive operations after collapse
According to FOX59, Carmel Fire Department units rolled up to find heavy fire churning inside a parks maintenance building, with a towering smoke column visible from 116th Street. The rear portion of the structure partially gave way, prompting firefighters to back out and shift into a defensive strategy, attacking the flames from the outside for safety. The Carmel Police Department shared photos of the scene as firefighters worked into the night to keep the blaze in check.
Parks footprint and operations
Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation manages more than 700 acres of parkland citywide, and department materials list its administrative office at 1411 E. 116th Street. The maintenance compound serves as a behind-the-scenes workhorse, storing equipment and supplies that keep trails open and seasonal programs running. Park staff on site coordinated with emergency crews to gauge the extent of the damage and start planning what comes next for operations.
Trails closed and EMA requested to assist
Per FOX59, Carmel Clay Parks temporarily closed all trails in Central Park East Woods because of the heavy smoke lingering in the area. Hamilton County Emergency Management was called in to assist if runoff control or containment of any chemicals stored inside the building became necessary. Crews remained in a defensive posture, and the cause of the fire was still unknown at the time of reporting.

Fire investigators are now tasked with figuring out what sparked the blaze, and officials say they plan to release more information as it becomes available.
