A 17-year-old Homewood boy was found dead Wednesday evening along the edge of the Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, a jarring discovery in a patch of woods many locals know as a peaceful escape. First responders tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Search and discovery
Homewood police were called around 5:45 p.m. after the teen’s father reported him missing and expressed concern for his son’s safety, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Officers began searching the preserve area using a drone and a K-9 unit and found the teen unconscious at about 7:30 p.m.
Emergency crews performed lifesaving measures, but the 17-year-old did not survive. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has opened a death investigation, authorities said.
Identity and investigation
Local reports identified the victim as 17-year-old Luke Burica of Homewood. He was found in the 17700 block of Ashland Avenue near the nature preserve. Patch reports that Illinois State Police are assisting Homewood detectives with the case. An autopsy and toxicology tests are pending to determine the cause and manner of death, and investigators have not publicly indicated any suspected criminal activity.
Officials' message
Homewood Police Chief Tom Johnson told the Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle that detectives are still in the early stages of their work. He said the Illinois State Police are helping collect evidence and coordinate with the medical examiner’s office.
Johnson also tried to calm community nerves, calling it “an isolated incident” and saying there is no broader danger to the public.
About the preserve
The Izaak Walton Nature Preserve is a heavily wooded, lake-dotted green space that draws walkers, birdwatchers and families from across the south suburbs. It has been described as spanning more than 190 acres, with trails, ponds and dense tree cover, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. For many Homewood residents, it is a familiar backdrop for quiet walks and weekend outings.
What happens next
The Cook County medical examiner’s office is awaiting autopsy and toxicology results, and Homewood detectives are continuing to work with Illinois State Police investigators on the case, according to Patch. Officials say they will release more information as it becomes available and as investigators complete their review.
