Police say a 56-year-old Indianapolis man who already carried a sex offender label is back behind bars after sending graphic messages and explicit videos to what he thought was a 14-year-old girl. Instead, investigators say, he had been talking to an undercover account, and the online exchange quickly turned into a takedown.

Officers arrested Daniel Elliott on Monday, and he is now facing multiple felony counts tied to the alleged online conversation.

According to WTHR, court documents list two counts of child solicitation, along with attempted vicarious sexual gratification and attempted dissemination of matter harmful to minors. Prosecutors say the chats included explicit video clips, sexual messages, and requests to meet in person. An initial hearing was set for Thursday morning.

Court filings quoted by WTHR say Elliott allegedly wrote, "age is just number baby girl," and that investigators recovered three explicit videos he allegedly sent. Detectives reportedly compared photos from the chat to a driver’s license image, then used Bureau of Motor Vehicle records to trace him to an Indianapolis address, which led to the May arrest.

How investigators say they tracked him down

Court filings indicate an Eldridge, Iowa detective first spotted the suspect after messages targeted a decoy social media account. That detective then contacted Indianapolis authorities to coordinate the investigation.

From there, Indianapolis investigators used sex offender registration information and photo comparisons to identify Elliott. Detectives arranged for his arrest, which police say occurred without incident.

Criminal history and legal exposure

Online court records reviewed by reporters show Elliott was convicted in 2021 in Hancock County for possession of child pornography and was placed on a four-year term of probation. Filings say he violated that probation in 2022 and later served more than two years in custody.

Under the Indiana Code, child solicitation is a Class D felony, with penalties that increase when cases involve computer networks or prior related convictions. If convicted in the current case, Elliott would also remain subject to sex offender registration rules and could face residency restrictions tied to his prior offenses.

What’s next in court

Online court records show Elliott appeared for an initial hearing yesterday morning and remains in custody while the case moves forward. Prosecutors are expected to decide at upcoming hearings whether to formally file or enhance charges. The court will also take up scheduling and any bond issues at later dates.

Similar enforcement in central Indiana

Undercover decoy operations have led to other recent arrests in central Indiana. In May, a former Zionsville orchestra teacher was arrested in a Lebanon Park sting, a case highlighted in Ex-Zionsville teacher busted. That case, like Elliott’s, illustrates how local agencies are leaning on online decoys to target adults who try to solicit minors.

Resources for parents and tips

Authorities encourage anyone with information about this case or similar online enticement to contact local law enforcement. Reports can also be filed with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children through the NCMEC CyberTipline or by calling 1-800-THE-LOST.

Experts advise parents and guardians to preserve screenshots, note the platforms involved, and record timestamps if they suspect inappropriate contact. Those details can help investigators confirm what happened and move more quickly on potential leads.
