A neighborhood money dispute in Richmond allegedly exploded into violence when a man was beaten with a metal pipe and a glass tequila bottle, leaving him seriously injured. Prosecutors have now charged 31-year-old Richmond resident Fredrick Rodgers in connection with the attack.
According to the Richmond Palladium-Item, Rodgers was formally charged on May 19, 2026, nearly a year after the alleged assault on May 24, 2025. Police say the attack happened on the 600 block of South Ninth Street, where the 35-year-old victim lives in a shed. During a dispute over money, officers allege Rodgers struck the man multiple times with a metal pipe, a glass tequila bottle and a piece of wood.
Legal implications
Rodgers is charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury, classified as a Level 5 felony, and intimidation, a Level 6 felony. Under Indiana law, a Level 5 felony carries a potential prison term of one to six years, while a Level 6 felony can carry a sentence of up to 30 months. Both charges can also bring fines and other penalties, as laid out in state statutes summarized by Justia.
A string of violent calls
The alleged beating is one of several violent episodes reported in Richmond this spring, giving local police no shortage of calls involving household weapons and family disputes. In April, officers said a 49-year-old woman struck her husband with a beer bottle and faced battery and intimidation charges, according to AOL. Earlier in May, police reported a separate case in which a man allegedly hurled a cinder block through a window before attacking a relative, as reported by AOL.
What’s next
The case against Rodgers is now in Wayne County court, where public dockets will list upcoming hearings and any new filings as they are entered. Officials are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Richmond Police Department or the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
