A rural after-school bus run turned tragic Friday afternoon when a motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a Tippecanoe School Corporation bus at the intersection of State Road 28 and County Road 400 East, just outside Lafayette. Four Wainwright Middle School students were on board and were not reported injured at the scene. Indiana State Police responded, and the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office will identify the rider and determine the official cause of death.
What investigators say
Indiana State Police told WISH-TV that the school bus was traveling south on County Road 400 East and had entered the intersection to turn left onto State Road 28 just after 4 p.m. Friday. A motorcycle headed west on State Road 28 then collided with the bus. Investigators said the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, and no other injuries were reported. State police have not released the rider’s name and say the investigation is ongoing.
Local crash patterns
The crash fits a pattern that local planners know all too well. The Area Plan Commission’s 2015-2024 fatal-crash review for Tippecanoe County notes that left-turn and intersection collisions are a recurring part of the county’s deadly crash picture, and that rural roads account for a large share of recent fatalities. The findings underscore how risky county-state junctions can be when something goes wrong. The APC report highlights failure to yield and right-angle impacts as common factors in local fatal wrecks.
National trends are not encouraging either. Motorcycle deaths have risen in recent years, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 6,335 motorcyclists were killed nationwide in 2023, a backdrop investigators keep in mind when reconstructing serious crashes.
Investigation and next steps
Indiana State Police are continuing to piece together what happened at the intersection, including the movements of both vehicles and any contributing factors, WISH-TV reported. The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s name after an autopsy and notification of family.
The bus involved is operated by Tippecanoe School Corporation. The district’s Transportation Department runs routes for Wainwright Middle School and other campuses in the area. Officials have asked anyone who may have information or video related to the crash to contact state police as they work to build a full picture of the collision.
Safety reminders
Traffic-safety specialists point out that turns across oncoming traffic, like the left turns seen at many rural crossroads, are among the most hazardous moments for both riders and drivers. Higher speeds on state roads and limited sight lines in the countryside can shrink the margin for error.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety stresses the role of helmets and technologies such as antilock braking systems in reducing the chances that a crash will be fatal. Local agencies use detailed crash data, including wrecks like this one, to flag dangerous intersections and help justify funding for safety upgrades. County documents note that planners and engineers routinely comb through fatal-crash records to identify high-risk locations and potential fixes.
