About a dozen people were injured late Friday night after gunmen opened fire from a passing vehicle in the Roseland neighborhood on Chicago’s Far South Side. Officers arrived shortly after 11 p.m. and found multiple people struck amid a crowd on W. 95th Street.
Police: Shooters Fired From a Red SUV
Officers responded to the 200 block of W. 95th Street a little after 11 p.m., and police say a red SUV pulled alongside a large group while two people inside opened fire before fleeing the scene. Early information from law enforcement indicates multiple victims were struck and investigators remained on scene overnight, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
Roseland Has Seen Recent Violence
The shooting adds to a string of violent incidents on the Far South Side in recent weeks. A separate late-night killing near Abbott Park earlier this month underscored local safety concerns along the 95th Street corridor, as reported in a deadly dust-up by Abbott Park.
Who Was Hurt
Police listed about 12 people as shooting victims, with ages reported between 17 and 47 and several people self-transporting to nearby hospitals. Among those named by officers were a 32-year-old woman shot twice in the back who was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition, a 44-year-old man with graze wounds taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, and a 26-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds who was in critical condition at UChicago. Other victims were treated at Trinity Hospital and Little Company of Mary, per early police information reported by FOX 32 Chicago.
Investigation Underway
Area detectives are handling the probe and police have not released a suspect description or a motive. Authorities asked anyone with video or tips to contact detectives as the investigation continues; no arrests were reported late Friday.
