Chicago firefighters battled a fierce extra-alarm blaze Thursday morning on the city's South Side after flames tore through an apartment building in the 4500 block of South Laflin. Thick smoke rolled over the Back of the Yards neighborhood, with a dark column hanging over the area and visible for blocks while crews attacked the fire from the street. Residents clustered on nearby corners as fire units stretched hose lines and raised ladders in an effort to bring the flames under control.
As reported by ABC7 Chicago, Chopper7's live video showed heavy smoke and flames, and one building's roof appeared to have collapsed while at least one neighboring structure showed visible damage. According to the station, the Chicago Fire Department upgraded the response to an extra-alarm, which brought additional engines and ladder companies racing to the scene. During the live coverage, crews were still working to knock down the fire, and investigators had not yet released any information about a possible cause.
Extra-Alarm Response And Neighborhood History
An extra-alarm call is triggered when initial fire crews on scene need more people, more rigs, or more water lines to keep fast-moving flames from spreading. As noted by CBS Chicago, previous extra-alarm fires in Back of the Yards have led to roof collapses and prompted follow-up visits from the city's Department of Buildings to check for unstable or unsafe structures. A separate 3-11 alarm warehouse fire in 2024 also drew dozens of units and heavily taxed local resources.
What Officials Say And What Comes Next
According to ABC7 Chicago, officials had not immediately released any details on possible injuries or how the fire started while firefighters remained focused on securing the scene. After a blaze of this size is brought under control, investigators and the city's Department of Buildings typically move in to assess the damage, determine structural safety, and decide whether residents can return or if buildings need further work before anyone is allowed back inside.
