A workplace argument inside the Indiana Convention Center turned violent last evening when a woman was stabbed by a coworker, according to Indianapolis police. Officers were called just after 6:40 p.m., and the victim was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Detectives say the confrontation started in a breakroom and is still under investigation.
Scene And Response
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials said officers were dispatched to the convention center at 100 S. Capitol Ave shortly after 6:40 p.m., according to WIBC 93.1 FM. Investigators reported that two women who worked together got into a fight in a breakroom before one allegedly stabbed the other. The injured woman was transported to a hospital in serious condition.
The venue's website, Indiana Convention Center & Lucas Oil Stadium, lists 100 South Capitol Ave as its address and shows the convention center was hosting events on June 17, the day of the incident.
Suspect, Arrest And Charges
Police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Brandy Good. Detectives later located Good at a home on the northwest side of Indianapolis and arrested her, WIBC 93.1 FM reports.
IMPD told the station that the case remains under investigation. Jail records list preliminary charges of battery with a deadly weapon, which is a felony, and misdemeanor battery. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will review the investigation and decide whether to file formal charges and what those charges will be.
What The Charge Means
Under Indiana law, a battery committed "with a deadly weapon" is treated as a Level 5 felony, as outlined in the Indiana Code. That is a significant step up from a simple scuffle.
Sentencing ranges for Level 5 felonies, including a fixed term of one to six years and an advisory three-year sentence, are summarized by resources such as FindLaw. Any eventual punishment would depend on what charges prosecutors choose to file, the evidence presented in court, and any prior convictions that might be on the defendant's record.
What's Next
Detectives are continuing to work the case, and city officials have not released additional information about the circumstances of the breakroom fight or the victim's condition. This story will be updated as IMPD and the Marion County Prosecutor's Office release more details.
