The north bank of the Chicago River is getting another place to see and be seen. The Carlyle Club is slated to open inside the historic Reid Murdoch Building at 316 N. Clark Street, bringing new riverfront dining to a stretch of River North that has quickly turned into a nightlife magnet. Construction crews are already carving out an expanded riverside seating area, and operators are circling a late-summer debut.

The plan fits neatly into the ongoing makeover of River North’s waterfront, where landlords have doubled down on riverwalk-facing concepts to keep people lingering after work and on weekends. The Carlyle Club is the latest bid to turn the north bank into more of an all-evening hangout than a daytime office corridor.

According to Crain's Chicago Business, the Carlyle Club will occupy a river-facing slot in the Reid Murdoch Center, and the outlet published a rendering of the bar credited to Social Design Studio. Crain's framed the project as one more piece of what it called the north bank’s “culinary refresh,” and its story delivered the first public visuals of the in-the-works club.

Friedman Properties, which serves as the Reid Murdoch Center’s landlord, confirmed the new tenant in a LinkedIn post. The company wrote that “the restaurant and expansive new riverwalk is now under construction” and named Group LV Hospitality as the operator, adding congratulations for project partners and reiterating that the build-out is moving ahead with a late-summer target for opening. Friedman Properties' LinkedIn post provided the confirmation.

The early renderings lean into a modern social club vibe rather than a quick in-and-out restaurant. A long central bar anchors the room, flanked by leather booths and broad windows that frame the river, setting up the kind of sightlines that tend to fill Instagram feeds on warm nights.

Crain's Chicago Business credited Social Design Studio for the visuals and reported that the interior is expected to lean heavily on cocktail service and lounge seating instead of fast-casual fare. In other words, think lingering over drinks and river views, not speed-running a sandwich between meetings.

What it means for the north bank

The Carlyle Club joins a growing roster of recent leases and restaurant announcements along the Riverwalk and throughout River North, as landlords try to leverage riverfront amenities to attract both office tenants and customers. The Reid Murdoch building has been a particular focus of that playbook.

Friedman Properties has tracked leasing wins and project updates for the property on its website, positioning the Reid Murdoch riverwalk activation as part of a broader strategy to reenergize the north bank. The company’s news page highlights recent leasing and restaurant moves around the building, with the Carlyle Club now in the mix.

For now, there is no public menu and no firm reservation timeline. Operators say they plan to release more details as the build-out continues. Until then, the available renderings and the landlord’s announcement are the clearest public peek at what the Carlyle Club will look like when River North’s riverfront returns to full summer swing.
