Covington police say a coordinated undercover sweep across Louisiana and Mississippi on Monday ended with 22 people in handcuffs after investigators targeted suspects who allegedly used social media and other online platforms to solicit and groom children. The people arrested range in age from 20 to 69 and face a slate of felony counts, according to authorities.
Multi-agency sting, police say
The Criminal Investigation Division of the Covington Police Department led the operation, working with the Internet Crimes Against Children unit, the department’s Special Response Team, the 22nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office Special Victims Unit task force and the Louisiana Attorney General’s office, officials said. According to WGNO, officers executed coordinated arrests across jurisdictions in both Louisiana and Mississippi as the sting unfolded.
Named suspects and charges
Covington police publicly identified several of the people arrested, including Ralph Seibel of Slidell, who is accused of computer-aided solicitation of a minor and child grooming, and James Granier of Loranger, who faces counts that include solicitation and attempted production or possession of pornography involving juveniles, among others. Local outlet WDSU has previously detailed similar Covington-area arrests and the types of charges that have been filed this year.
How investigators say the sting worked
Investigators say they used undercover profiles and closely monitored chatrooms and social media accounts to spot people who appeared to be seeking sexual contact with minors. When suspects allegedly set up in-person meetings, officers moved in and made the arrests, according to Covington police. The Louisiana State Police has described comparable multi-day efforts by its Special Victims Unit and federal partners in St. Tammany Parish in recent months, per a release from the Louisiana State Police.
Part of a wider statewide push
The Covington arrests come amid a broader statewide clampdown on online sex offenses. In mid-May, Attorney General Liz Murrill’s office announced the results of a separate two-month initiative in the greater Baton Rouge area that focused on registered sex offenders and resulted in 60 arrests, underscoring how these efforts are being coordinated across multiple parishes, according to WAFB.
Charges and next steps
The latest Covington-area investigation involves felony counts that include computer-aided solicitation of a minor, indecent behavior with juveniles, child grooming and attempted production of pornography involving juveniles, depending on the individual defendant, according to FOX 8. Prosecutors in the 22nd Judicial District and other involved jurisdictions are expected to review the case files and determine the final list of charges. Authorities urged anyone with information about suspected child exploitation to submit tips through LA-SAFE or local law-enforcement hotlines.
Community response
Covington police said they will continue follow-up work tied to the operation and asked residents to stay alert, particularly when it comes to children’s online lives. Parents and guardians were reminded to actively monitor internet use at home. A five-arrest sweep in February previously covered by local media highlighted similar child exploitation crackdowns, and the latest round of arrests appears to continue months of coordinated child-safety enforcement efforts across the Northshore.
