A fast-moving fire ripped through a four-unit apartment building on Indianapolis’s east side Saturday, forcing six adults and five children out of their homes, according to officials. Most tenants were away when the flames took hold, and those who were inside got out after working smoke alarms jolted them awake to the danger.
In an update posted by the Indianapolis Fire Department, crews reported finding heavy fire inside the building at 2531 E. 10th St. Firefighters removed occupants from four separate housing units. The department did not identify a cause or detail any long-term assistance plans for the residents who were displaced.
Four-Unit Building Emptied Out
Public property records and real estate listings, including Redfin, list 2531 E. 10th St as a two-story multifamily building with four units, consistent with the fire department’s report. Recent listings show the property has changed hands or been on the market within the past year, hinting at a mix of long- and short-term renters in the Near Eastside neighborhood.
Officials said the blaze ultimately displaced six adults and five children. Most were not home when the fire started, and those who were managed to evacuate safely once smoke alarms sounded, according to the department’s post. The initial update noted that crews battled heavy fire inside the structure, although it did not spell out how extensive the interior damage was or whether any of the units remain habitable.
Working Smoke Alarms Credited With Safe Escape
The department credited functioning smoke alarms with giving residents time to escape, a point that lines up with national safety data. Research from the National Fire Protection Association finds that the death rate per 1,000 reported home structure fires is significantly lower when smoke alarms are installed and working.
The Indianapolis Fire Department’s initial statement did not list a suspected cause of the fire or indicate whether city agencies or relief groups had arranged shelter for the displaced families. This story will be updated as officials release more information.
