A Monday morning shift at Amazon's fulfillment center on Vollmer Road in Matteson turned into an active crime scene after reports of gunfire, according to authorities. Police responded to the sprawling warehouse complex as detectives moved through the area, marking evidence and launching an investigation. Officials did not immediately provide information about possible injuries, suspects or a motive.
What officials have said
Matteson police confirmed they were called to the Amazon facility Monday, according to ABC7 Chicago. The outlet reported the building's address as 7001 Vollmer Road and noted that detectives were still processing the scene while details remained scarce. As of late morning, Matteson police had not released a more detailed public statement.
Past incidents at the Matteson site
This is not the first time gunfire has been reported at the Matteson fulfillment center. In July 2024 a 33-year-old woman suffered a graze wound in a parking-lot shooting that investigators said appeared to be retaliation after an earlier fight, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Hoodline also recapped that earlier case (Woman Injured In Shooting), which unfolded in one of the center's exterior lots.
Authorities previously investigated a separate altercation in the parking lot at the same address in 2022, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
Other recent incidents at Amazon sites
The latest Matteson shooting comes amid renewed attention on safety at suburban Amazon facilities. On June 4 an employee was shot and killed inside an employee parking garage at an Amazon site in Melrose Park, and a suspect was later charged in that case, as reported by CBS Chicago. Together, the incidents have put a fresh spotlight on security at large distribution centers across the region.
What to watch
As of late morning, investigators with the Matteson Police Department and regional partners remained at the Amazon fulfillment center collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. Residents seeking verified updates on the case can monitor official releases on the Village of Matteson website, where police statements and advisories are posted.
