A late-night bike ride through Grant Park ended in tragedy early Tuesday when a 27-year-old man was shot and killed along a busy stretch of the Loop, renewing anxiety over safety in Chicago's lakefront front yard. Police say the man was riding his bicycle around 12:15 a.m. when shots rang out. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later died, according to authorities.
What Police Say Happened
According to ABC7 Chicago, the shooting took place in the 300-block of East Jackson Drive. The victim was reportedly riding on the sidewalk when he heard gunfire and suddenly felt pain. Police said he had been shot in the upper leg before being transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later died. Area Three detectives have opened an investigation into the case, ABC7 reports.
String Of Incidents Puts Spotlight On Grant Park
The deadly shooting follows other unsettling incidents in the same park this month. NBC Chicago reported that a large burning cross was discovered in Grant Park on June 10, prompting an investigation by police and federal authorities. And a May 5 Hoodline story on a skate park showdown stabbing detailed an attack near the park’s skate area that left a 24-year-old injured, adding to concerns about late-night violence circling the Loop.
