Today's commute near the West Oakland BART station turned deadly when a person was fatally shot just steps from the transit hub, according to Oakland police.
Officers and paramedics were called to the 1400 block of Fifth Street at about 7:30 AM, where they found a victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The person was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities have not yet released the victim’s name, according to SFGATE. Police released a few other details as detectives processed the scene.
Oakland police homicide detectives have taken over the case and are asking anyone with information, videos or photos to come forward. String of Violence Near Fifth Street
The stretch of Fifth Street near the station has become a recurring trouble spot, with conflicts that sometimes spiral into violence and are often tied to disputes at encampments and RVs. In April, an RV-related dispute on Fifth Street reportedly escalated when an RV feud erupted in gunfire, and local television coverage has tracked other deadly shootings across Oakland in recent months, per KTVU.
