A fierce overnight fire tore through a building at the New Albany Golf Course on Gray Brook Lane, gutting the former country-club structure, causing heavy damage and drawing a large response from local fire crews. Firefighters initially pushed inside for an interior attack but had to pull back when conditions deteriorated, and one firefighter suffered a minor injury that was treated on scene.
Crews were dispatched to the course just before 11 p.m. Sunday, where they found heavy smoke and flames pouring from the former New Albany Country Club building on Gray Brook Lane near Grant Line Road, according to WDRB. Several fire trucks remained at the scene into the early morning hours as crews worked to knock down the blaze.
The property houses the New Albany Golf Course, and the course website lists its address on Graybrook Lane along with tee-time booking and contact details for golfers, per the course's official page. When checked Monday morning, there were no posted notices on the site about closures or fire-related damage.
Firefighters attempted to battle the flames from inside but were ordered out because of "extremely high temperatures and zero visibility," and the fire was brought under control in about two hours, WDRB reports. Officials told the station that extra crews were called in because of the intense smoke and flames, and department photos show the structure fully involved and suffering heavy structural damage. The station also reported that one firefighter received a minor injury and was treated at the scene, and investigators have not announced any other injuries.
Mutual aid and local resources
The response tapped into a broader network of area fire departments. Floyd County shifted to a consolidated fire territory earlier this year to streamline mutual aid and boost manpower for larger incidents. As reported by WAVE3, the Floyd County Fire Territory began operations on Jan. 1, 2026, with the goal of coordinating resources across township and city units.
Investigation under way
The Indiana State Fire Marshal's office has been called in to investigate the cause of the blaze, a routine step for large structure fires in Indiana. For background on how the office handles origin-and-cause investigations, readers can visit the Indiana Department of Homeland Security press page at Indiana DHS.
What to expect next
Course managers and city officials have not yet said whether the clubhouse or the course will reopen this week. Golfers with tee times on the books are encouraged to check the New Albany Golf Course website for updates and contact information at New Albany Golf Course. This story will be updated as investigators and local authorities release additional information.
