A pre-dawn collision between a train and a pedestrian on Indianapolis' southwest side left one person dead early Friday, authorities said.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called around 4:10 a.m. to the intersection of Rockville Road and Robton Avenue, where medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The person has not yet been publicly identified.
What Happened
IMPD officers responded after reports that a train had struck a person in the area. Medics confirmed the individual died at the scene, according to WISH-TV.
Investigators are still sorting out how the crash unfolded and what the pedestrian and train were doing in the moments leading up to the impact, WISH-TV reports.
Pedestrian Safety In Indy
The death comes as Indianapolis officials work to bring traffic fatalities down across the city. In December the city adopted a Vision Zero Action Plan that aims to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2035, according to You Are Current.
Regional planners have also flagged a familiar pattern in the crash data: a relatively small share of streets is responsible for a disproportionately large number of fatal and serious-injury collisions, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization's annual safety reporting.
Investigation Ongoing
Police have not released further details about the victim or the train operator. The case remains under active investigation, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact IMPD. The situation is being treated as a developing case, according to WISH-TV.
