A quiet Tuesday late morning in Brookfield turned chaotic when a driver bolted from a traffic stop, then crashed and rolled a vehicle at the Citgo station near Mayfair Road and Capitol Drive. Brookfield police took the driver into custody at the scene and say they pulled a handgun from the wrecked vehicle that had been reported stolen.
Police account and investigation
According to a statement to FOX6 Milwaukee, an officer initiated a traffic stop near 124th Street and Capitol Drive at about 11:16 a.m. when the driver took off. Police say the officer did not pursue. Shortly afterward, the vehicle crashed and rolled near Mayfair and Capitol. During the on-scene investigation, officers say they recovered the stolen handgun and will refer potential charges to the Waukesha County District Attorney’s Office for review.
Scene captured on traffic cameras
The messy aftermath did not stay off the internet for long. Local traffic cameras along the Capitol Drive corridor recorded the scene, and viewer-shot video quickly circulated online. The state's 511 camera network keeps feeds on Capitol Drive and nearby routes, according to Wasatch Roads.
Brookfield's recent pursuit history
This is not Brookfield's first recent brush with a high-speed scare. In November, another chase ended the same way, with a crash and an arrest. That earlier incident was highlighted as a high-speed Brookfield crash and arrest, underscoring a run of tense roadside encounters in the area.
Legal next steps
For this latest case, Brookfield police say they will forward reports to the Waukesha County District Attorney’s Office to determine what charges the driver could face. Investigators remained on scene gathering evidence, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Brookfield Police Department, the agency told FOX6 Milwaukee.
