A United Airlines flight from Indianapolis to Houston did not get far yesterday before an onboard disturbance sent it right back to the gate, where police were waiting. Authorities say 32-year-old Jacob Cook of Fortville was taken into custody at Indianapolis International Airport after the jet returned. He was later booked into the Marion County Adult Detention Center on preliminary charges that include disrupting the operation of an aircraft, disorderly conduct at an airport and resisting law enforcement.
Flight tracking data show that United 3989 departed Indianapolis, then reversed course and returned to the airport shortly after takeoff. According to FlightStats, UA3989 typically operates between Indianapolis and Houston using Mesa-operated regional aircraft.
Police Response And Onboard Video
As reported by Fox59, video from a Facebook livestream reviewed by reporters shows a man standing in the aisle and shouting at passengers and crew, at one point insisting that the plane land so he could get off. Police arrested the passenger when the jet returned to the gate, and jail records list preliminary counts tied to the incident.
The Indianapolis Airport Authority told reporters that the disturbance was limited to the single flight and did not affect broader airport operations, so the drama stayed inside the cabin instead of spilling out onto the rest of IND.
State And Federal Penalties
Federal law also addresses interference with flight crews. Under 49 U.S.C. section 46504, which criminalizes assaulting or intimidating a flight crew member or attendant, penalties can include fines and up to 20 years in prison, according to Cornell Law School.
On the state side, Indiana sentencing rules say a Level 4 felony carries a standard range of roughly two to twelve years, with an advisory sentence of six years, per Justia. Any actual sentence would depend on which formal charges prosecutors ultimately file and the outcome of the case, including the possibility of a plea agreement.
Marion County court records will show whether prosecutors move ahead with formal charges and when Cook is scheduled to appear in court. For now, officials say the investigation remains active, and they are not releasing many details beyond the initial report.
