Early Sunday morning, a deadly hit-and-run on the west side of Indianapolis turned a high-speed interstate ramp into an active crime scene, leaving one pedestrian dead and state troopers searching for the driver who took off.
The crash happened around 6:50 a.m. on the ramp connecting I-465 southbound to I-74 westbound, according to Indiana State Police. Emergency crews shut down the ramp while medics, troopers and crash reconstruction specialists worked the scene. No arrests had been reported as of Sunday, and authorities have not yet released the victim’s name.
Indiana State Police told FOX59 the crash involved a pedestrian who was struck, and investigators are treating it as a hit-and-run. The ramp from I-465 southbound to I-74 westbound was shut down for the investigation, and state crash reconstructionists were called in. The Indiana Department of Transportation said it deferred the investigation to state police while its crews focused on traffic control and cleanup.
Investigation underway
Troopers say the investigation is very much active as they try to piece together how a person ended up in the path of traffic on a fast-moving interstate ramp. Reconstruction specialists are expected to examine any vehicle damage, markings or debris on the roadway and review available video in an effort to build a clear timeline of what happened.
INDOT crews and local emergency responders reopened lanes once the scene was initially cleared, but the ramp stayed closed for several hours while investigators worked. Authorities urged drivers to steer clear of the area during the closure so they could safely collect evidence.
Why ramps are perilous
Interstate ramps are built for speed and vehicle flow, not pedestrians, and when someone ends up on foot in those zones the consequences are often catastrophic. Crashes on the I-465 corridor can ripple far beyond the immediate scene, snarling traffic and straining emergency resources, as documented in Hoodline’s recent coverage, Overturned semi causes major traffic snarl.
Local broadcasters have also highlighted the lethal risks to anyone on foot near the beltway, including fatal pedestrian strikes on other stretches of I-465, such as those covered by WRTV. Together, the incidents underscore how quickly a roadside situation on a high-speed interstate can turn deadly.
Indiana State Police are asking anyone who may have seen the crash, or who was driving in the area around 6:50 a.m. and has dashcam or other video, to contact Troop A or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana. Investigators say any tip, clip or record could help them confirm the sequence of events. Officials added that more details will be released as the investigation moves forward.
