A reported shooting in downtown San Jose turned into a brief foot chase today, ending with a 17-year-old in custody and a gun recovered, police said.
Officers were called at about 12:16 AM to the 300 block of South First Street for a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a male they tried to detain. According to police, the suspect ran but was caught after a brief foot chase. Officers recovered a firearm at the scene and said no shooting victims were found.

San Jose police say the 17-year-old suspect was arrested after the brief pursuit and booked into juvenile hall. According to NBC Bay Area, investigators confirmed that the case remains open as they sort out what led to the reported gunfire.
Recent downtown gun violence
The arrest comes after a string of violent incidents in the city’s core in recent weeks, including a late-June shooting that left one person dead and another seriously injured near North Market Street and West Santa Clara Street. As the San Francisco Chronicle reported, police treated that case as a homicide and increased patrols in the downtown entertainment district.

Police did not immediately release the teen’s name or say whether formal charges have been filed.
